HOW YOU CAN HELP
Smart meters help utility companies reduce their carbon footprint by eliminating the need to visit residential properties to read the meter As consumers, we benefit from more accurate billing and the ability to more easily monitor and manage our usage - there's also an opportunity to earn an annual income, by helping build the LoRaWAN network that monitors the smart meters
WHAT IS LORAWAN?
LoRaWAN smart meters contain a battery powered radio module that wakes up 4 times per day to transmit data to the LoRaWAN network in a short 3 second burst
LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Wide Area Network
LoRaWAN aerials are spaced about every 500 to 1,000 meters and are mounted on residential properties
LoRaWAN is a safe, secure, low-power, highly effective method for reading data from a large number of smart meters
WHY SMART METERS?
Smart meters significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with meter reading by removing the need for manual, in-person readings.
They also enhance utility companies’ ability to manage energy demand by transmitting data to the LoRaWAN network four times daily, compared to the traditional monthly reporting cycle.
HOW IT WORKS
LoRaWAN smart meters are equipped with battery-powered radio modules that activate four times per day, transmitting data to the LoRaWAN network in brief bursts lasting around three seconds.
LoRaWAN, which stands for Long Range Wide Area Network, is a low-power, secure, and efficient communication method designed to handle data from large numbers of smart meters.
LoRaWAN aerials are typically installed on residential buildings and are spaced approximately every 500 to 1,000 meters to ensure consistent coverage.
HOW CAN I HELP?
You can lease a small space on your property to host a LoRaWAN aerial for your neighbourhood and receive £350 per year in return.
Installing aerials on residential properties is significantly faster and more cost-effective than constructing dedicated masts across the UK.
To check if your area needs coverage, simply send us your postcode and house number/street. If eligible, installation can take place within approximately 7 days. You’ll receive a £350 payment upon installation, and an additional £350 each year on the anniversary of the setup.
